SARASOTA (WSNN) – With the predicted drops in temperature, the Salvation Army is providing cold weather sheltering for those in need.

Staff says they’re expecting a 50-percent increase, from their usual 30 people.

Pre-COVID, the Salvation Army allowed more than 200 people to use the shelters, but now with COVID, its limited to about 70 people.

And some on the Suncoast, say it’s a little too chilly.

“I’m good with the collective, cumulative two-weeks of winter we have down here, just as long as it doesn’t snow, I’m good with that,” Sarasota resident, Nick Guy said.

“I have two sweaters on,” Sarasota Resident, Gary Wthinthrope said.

“I guess you can say ironically, it’s a warm welcome to December,” Sarasota Resident, Michael May said.

But others say it’s nice to have something different from our usual warm temperatures.

“I’m here in Florida because I like the warmer weather, but it’s a nice treat when it’s cooler out,” Sarasota Resident, Lindsay Wilkinson said.

“It’s nice to have a break from the heat and I enjoy our fall and winter season here,” Lakeland residents, Dennis Munday said. “But when summer comes along, we get back on the beach and on the boat.”

The risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning increases during very cold weather, so Sarasota County Fire Department officials are advising you to use caution when heating your home.
