SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN TV) – Those who enjoy The Legacy Trail will soon be able to connect more directly with the downtown Sarasota area.

The City of Sarasota says in a press release that the city was awarded a $400,000 federal grant to build the Legacy Trail Payne Park Multi-Use Recreational Trail (MURT).

This will connect the trail at Payne Park to Alderman Street, south Payne Parkway, and East Avenue. Then you can head west toward the Bay, downtown, St. Armands or Lido Key. The city says it’ll offer shorter travel for walking, biking, scooters, skates, and mobility assistance devices.

City staff is now working to complete the National Environmental Policy Act; this is required by the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure environmental protection.

The City of Sarasota says construction is expected to begin late 2024.
