SARASOTA – Big trucks rolled back into Nathan Benderson Park today.

You may see them out and about around Sarasota County, but do you ever wonder exactly what these trucks do?…

Nathan Benderson Park welcomed families to their 25th Annual Big Truck Day, giving them a chance to learn more about what each Sarasota County vehicle does when you see them out on the streets.

“This year we had to do a bit of a modified event, so it’s a drive thru almost like a reverse parade, we have 22 different vehicles parked throughout the route and cars and participants are able to drive through, wave at the trucks, see how some of them function, hear the horns, sirens, and so on,” said Sarasota County Parks and Recreation Supervisor, Sarah Good.

All 22 vehicles are Sarasota Counties very own

“So every one that we use, day in and day out throughout the county, so they’re getting to see them a little bit closer, sometimes, we might pass a dump truck but we don’t see it actually open, so it’s a little bit of an educational moment as well and knowing what Sarasota County has to offer,” said Good.

Good says the event is typically more interactive

“Almost like a touch-a-truck so the kids can come in and crawl into the vehicles and they’re able to honk the horns themselves, or sit up in them, so it’s a pretty cool event in that sense but this year we are happy to still host something and we are able to have the kids see what the trucks do,” said Good.

“It allows them to really understand that they’re not just cool and loud, but they serve a purpose here in Sarasota County,” said Director of Sarasota County’s Parks, Nicole Rissler.

About 650 kids were pre-registered to drive-thru for the event, which included a fun surprise at the end of the route

“Once they get to the end of our event, they are greeted by the Easter bunny and we have little goodie bags going to all the kids that came today,” said Good.
