SARASOTA COUNTY (WSNN) – With the rain in the forecast comes mosquitoes. This means we need to keep our eyes peeled and our bodies protected.

There are about 36 species in the county, that can turn into tens of millions of mosquitos.

The best way to protect yourself is wearing long sleeves clothes that aren’t too tight, using spray repellent preferably with DEET, and removing any standing water from around your home.

If the mosquito population gets bad in your area, the county is here for you.

“Every day we get information from all across the county,” Sarasota County Mosquito Management Outreach Specialist Louis Hagney said. “And we decide what areas need to be treated. We don’t like to do aerial treatments, but sometimes it’s necessary, this is a public health issue. These mosquitoes carry diseases, and some of those diseases are deadly.”

Those diseases include the West Nile virus, Yellow Fever, Dengue fever, and Chikungunya Fever.
