SARASOTA – The coronavirus pandemic has canceled several events on the Suncoast and now two highly anticipated firework displays can be added to that list.

The Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce and Suncoast Charities for Children both announced on Thursday the cancellation of their annual July 4th Fireworks displays.

In a joint statement both organizers say public safety, social distancing, and crowd management played a major role in the cancellations. Executive Director for Suncoast Charities for Children Lucy Nicandri says it was a difficult decision to make.

“Both boards, both their board and our board, did some deliberation and what it came down to was just not being able at this point to be able to ensure public safety, social distancing, and crowd management effectively until we know what those guidelines are,” said Nicandri.

Both organizations say they plan to be back with a bigger firework displays next year.
