SARASOTA – A car strikes an eighty-year-old woman Thursday morning, on the Suncoast. Trooper Kenn Watson says a man in a black Toyota truck was traveling northbound on U.S. 41 approaching Cass Street. The car veered off to the right turn lane, stopped, realized he passed his turn and began to back up. Unfortunately, he didn’t see the woman crossing the street behind him, and he struck her.

“It is paramount that we make good decisions when we’re behind the wheel,” Trooper Kenn Watson said. “Most certainly, when we’re backing up. We have to make sure that we have a clear view, and make sure that there is no blind spot before we backup. Hopefully, this person will be able to recover, but based on her age, it’s definitely going to be a fight.”

The woman was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating.
