FLORIDA (SNN TV) – You’ve likely heard to set your thermostat to 78 degrees during the summer. But that’s not really true.
A report from the Herald-Tribune says many think the source of this information is ENERGY STAR, a program run by the Environmental Protection Agency. But the EPA told the Palm Beach Post it doesn’t suggest 78 degrees.
The program says that recommendation came “through an older report” from 2009. However, the report says to use the numbers as a starting point for energy-saving temperatures, and then adjust the settings for your family’s schedule and to stay comfortable. It wasn’t meant as a recommended temperature.
The program does recommend turning up the air conditioning 7 degrees when away from home. FPL still recommends 78, saying each degree below 78 adds 3%-5% to your energy bill. The Palm Beach Post spoke to experts who say don’t be afraid to experiment with a warmer temperature, and make sure the house is efficient — sealed windows, sufficient insulation, and a newer air conditioning unit.
