SARASOTA (WSNN) – The global pandemic changes the way the Suncoast is celebrating Ramadan. Instead of celebrating indoors, the Islamic Society of Sarasota & Bradenton is feeding people, outdoors.

“It’s about what Prophet Muhammad says you’re not a true believer if you go to bed with a full stomach knowing that your neighbor is hungry,” Outreach member, Amani Makarita, said.

Islamic Society of Sarasota & Bradenton describes itself as a non-profit serving Muslims on the Suncoast and strengthening interfaith relations.

Makarita says the COVID-19 pandemic presents challenges in celebrating Ramadan, the fasting month for Muslims around the world.

“Every time in Ramadan we usually get together in the mosque,” Makarita said.

But, now that it’s closed, we try to still do something together and help others as well.”

A man who asked not to be seen on camera is one of those people who needs help.

“The coronavirus has affected me,” the homeless person said. “I lost my job three weeks ago. And it’s made me homeless.”

So, they created a program called, ‘Fast & Feed.’

“Since we fast in Ramadan, let’s feed others as well, you know, while we’re fasting,” Makarita said.

They reached out to All Faith’s Food Bank to distribute food every day.

“We try to make a schedule of what we receive and put food groups together,” Makarita said. “So, we make sure it’s a good meal in a bag.”

They offer fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, and non-perishable food items.

The drive-thru program began at the start of Ramadan on April 24th. And it will go through to May 23, the end of the holy month. They serve food every evening from five to six.

Makarita says the need for the Suncoast continues to grow.

“In the beginning, it was maybe about 20 something cars that came, and then it started growing, and very quickly it became 50 to 75 cars that come through,” Makarita said.

And anyone can receive the food.

“You just drive-thru, no questions asked,” Makarita said.

“What you do is greatly appreciated by everybody, by me certainly,” the homeless person said.

The drive-thru is located across the street from their mosque at 4350 North Lockwood Ridge Road in Sarasota.

It will continue every day from 5 to 6 pm until May 23.
