A Suncoast hair stylist advises not to do anything drastic with your hair

SARASOTA (WSNN) – The coronavirus pandemic has forced salons to close. And some people are taking drastic measures.

With Salons closed during the pandemic, this is what it’s come down to people cutting their own hair at home.

But, Modish Hair Salon owner, Haley Haxton, advises not to do anything drastic. She says it’s ok to trim your bangs, but not to your cut hair.

“Leave your kitchen scissors alone!” Haxton said.

She says kitchen scissors don’t compare to the professional ones; they will not do the job properly.

Tampa resident, Tara Drangle, cut her own hair using just that.

But what about hair color?

“Women my age have to die their hair to some degree,” Modish Salon client, Lee Ross, said.

Haxton says to use root spray, so as to not damage your hair.

“Everyone has their roots showing right now, just be a part of the movement, get some root spray and just simply cover up your roots,” Haxton said.

Haxton offers video tutorials with her clients on how to care for their hair.

“Just because we do professional’s hair and they need to look camera-ready for their zoom calls,” Haxton said. “So, we’ve been FaceTiming them on how, and just showing them how to trim their bangs, but not a whole hair-cut yet.”

Ross says she’s grateful to Haxton for the root-fixing tips.

“She really encouraged me not to do anything drastic, and really leaving the professional work to the professionals is really smart right now, so I’ve not done any cutting, I’ve not done any dying,” Ross said.

Ross says she’s happy to feel a little more normal during an abnormal time.

Modish Salon just opened in October and Haxton says she’s disappointed to not be able to open in Phase one. But, she says she understands how difficult it is to social-distance in her line of work.

“We are touching people, we are very close,” Haxton said. “We all specialize in color and extensions here at the salon, so we are up in their face, so I don’t feel like it’s safe.”

She says she’s hopeful to reopen soon for the sake of the business.
