PALMETTO (SNN TV) – Negotiations for new apartments in Palmetto move forward.

The development could soon bring new residents, restaurants, and retail to a property now used as overflow boat trailer parking.

The Herald-Tribune reports the Palmetto Community Redevelopment Agency voted 4 to 1 in May to accept a proposal to purchase the property. Apogee Real Estate Partners offered $2.95 million dollars to build 186 apartments, two restaurants, a 6,000 square foot plaza with an outdoor bar, 4,000 square feet of retail space, a parking garage, and 21 boat trailer parking spaces.

The ramp offers 18 official parking spots but has been used for overflow parking for about 80 to 100 boat trailers. Residents and boaters have raised concerns over what this means for the Riverside Park Public Boat Ramp, along with traffic congestion.

Palmetto Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant says this area “deserves to be a true gateway to the city of Palmetto,” and said the city needs permanent, rental, and affordable housing.
