SARASOTA – Sarasota residents could be seeing more construction affecting traffic with the plans to replace a water main pipe.

“We just want to inform the community about this really important infrastructure project about what the schedule is and what impacts they can expect,”  said Tony Centurione.

Centurione, Project Manager with the City of Sarasota, met with members of the community to give an update to the upcoming Project Scope.

“We’re replacing approximately 21 hundred feet of water main and this replacement is required to replace a deteriorated older pipe that is in critical need of repair,” said Centurione.

Centurione says construction will affect the surrounding areas of Dr. Martin Luther King Way — south to 19th St. on Orange Ave. “We’ll have some temporary maintenance of traffic some detours around the construction zone some impacts with transportation,” Centurione said.

Project Scope will also add new water service to some areas, add accessible ramps to sidewalks, and a full road asphalt restoration.

“The Utility Department strives to maintain reliable safe drinking water service so the replacement of this pipe just lets us continue that reliable safe drinking water supply for the City of Sarasota,” said Centurione.

Construction will also affect school bus stops and SCAT transit service along the route. School bus stops will be diverted to parallel streets during the construction – while the city works with SCAT to plan for alternative stops.

“It’s construction but there are going to be impacts but were here to work with residents to minimize those impacts as this important project comes through,” said Centurione.

Centurione says constructions is expected to take six to seven months and is anticipated to start in April and last until November. The project’s team will provide updates and alerts via city of Sarasota email alerts and community outreach and social media.
