SARASOTA – Around 1 in 5 Americans have a mental illness, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. The numbers are high, yet according to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, many people are afraid to talk about what they have. Colleen Thayer and Heather Dunn of NAMI’s Sarasota County chapter joined us in the studio to talk about the importance of ending the stigma, the difficulties people have talking about their illness, and teenagers being able to open up about their mental health issues.
