SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. (SNN TV) – The Sarasota County School Board is poised to approve a new contract with the teachers’ union and other employees, and select a new board chair at its meeting on Nov. 28.

According to the Herald-Tribune, the $37 million contract covers more than 5,000 Sarasota schools employees. It includes raises across the board and an immediate 2% one-time supplement to be paid to teachers and classified staff before next month’s winter break.

Instructors will receive a 3.5% raise, but instructors rated as highly effective would receive a 4.25% raise.

It appears the board could select Vice Chair Karen Rose as the new chairwoman. School board member Bridget Ziegler is the current chairwoman.

Rose has garnered some backlash in the past year, including when she raised the idea to redraw districts, which was approved weeks later despite strong opposition from both Moms for Liberty and other school board advocacy groups like Support Our Schools.
