SARASOTA – SRQ Vets remember our fallen heroes, who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“The purpose of the hike is to remember the people that served our country and didn’t come back, you know, they gave the ultimate sacrifice,” said Vice President of SRQ Vets, Rob Kehs.

SRQ Vets Board Member, Bill Sterbinsky says about 250 people registered for the hike across the Ringling Bridge

“And a lot more showed up, I don’t have those exact numbers but I would be as bold to say that it was as close to 300, 350, and the hike went over the bridge and back and it was quite warm out today, it was fun, and now when we come back the idea is to have a barbeque, there will be a band playing, have a beverage, enjoy your company, and cheers to this day, thank you for giving us this moment,” said Sterbinsky.

Sterbinsky says the purpose of the annual event is to come together and celebrate what Memorial Day is.

“It’s a day where we remember, but it’s a day where we don’t completely mourn, we celebrate because this is the gift that they gave us, to be out here with our families, to be out here with our friends, to be out here with other veterans and those families of veterans that have lost loved ones and to honor that ultimate sacrifice,” said Sterbinsky.

Proceeds raised from the event by SRQ vets will help veterans across the Suncoast

“We help out with cellphone bills, we help out with utility, we even go out and cut grass, we’ve done yard work, we’ve even helped build handicap ramps, those are the things that the money is going to that we do raise from this event,” said Kehs.

“For those who have fallen, and for those who can’t be here today we salute you, and we do this for you. And I’ll see you when I get there,” said Sterbinsky.
