NORTH PORT – Tragedy in North Port early Sunday when a deadly fire takes over a home and leaves one dead.

“The flames were unbelievable, they were up, they were so far, it looked like everything was on fire,” said Neighbor, Linda Peterson.

North Port Fire Rescue arrived to the 6700 block of Electra Avenue at around 2:30 AM for a house fire

“They discovered the house about 75% engulfed, there were flames coming through the roof and once they were able to get it extinguished and safely enter the home, they did find a deceased individual inside,” said City of North Port Communications Coordinator, Madison Heid.

Surrounding homes were evacuated as the fire took approximately 30 minutes to put out. One nearby neighbor says the flames were what caught her attention.

“I was looking out my window and the flames were up like over that tree, like 30, 40 feet high, and we were just looking out the window and I wanted to come out but I was in my pajamas, and first thing when we came out, we knew the guy, we can’t believe it,” said Peterson.

Peterson says the fire brought a lot of traffic to the quiet neighborhood.

“Three in the morning, I guess no one even heard it, my next door neighbor said she didn’t hear nothing, she didn’t see nothing,” said Peterson.

“Our thoughts go out to this person’s family and hopefully we can get down to the bottom of what happened and bring some closure to any family and friends,” said Heid.

State Fire Marshall Detectives are investigating the cause of the fire. This is an ongoing investigation.
