SARASOTA COUNTY (WSNN)- One Suncoast University receives a grant to study sharks.

The Tampa Bay Estuary Program and Restore America’s Estuaries awarded more than 165-thousand dollars to New College of Florida to fund shark research.

The research will be conducted by New College of Florida Associate Professor Jayne Gardiner, who plans to assess population trends for Tampa Bay shark species, addressing data gaps that currently hinder conservation and management efforts.

Gardiner will focus on blacktip, black nose, bull, and great hammerhead sharks in lower Tampa Bay.

The findings will help measure the impact of climate change and coastal development on the areas of the bay.
