TAMPA (SNN-TV) – Former Devil Rays and longtime Yankees outfielder and one of Derek Jeter’s best friends, Gerald Williams, — died today at 55 years old.

Jeter announced the news earlier today via the Players’ Tribune Twitter saying Williams passed away following a battle with cancer.

Williams was drafted by the Yankees in 1987 and played his first game in the big leagues in 1992. Williams went on to play 14 years in the Majors with 7 teams, including in Tampa in 2000 and 2001.

In 2000, Williams set career highs in home runs, walks, RBIs, hits, runs, and doubles. Tampa Bay writers named Williams the team’s most valuable player.

Williams batted .255 in his career and hit 85 home runs.
