SARASOTA – A few teens at the Boys and Girls club are trading in their week long Spring Break vacation for a week of community service.

“They’re taking the time out of their vacation to really do good for their community,” said Teen Program Director, Caroline Nigro.

While many high school students will take their Spring Break vacation to relax and soak up the sun, 60 high school students will dedicate their time off to service 9 non-profit organizations across the Suncoast.

“When they can learn how to be good stewards and active life long citizens it’s very important, they are interested in taking this initiative so we want to make sure we give them this opportunity to grow and learn and continue to develop those leadership skills to be the leaders for our future,” said Nigro.

Throughout the week, the students will participate in everything from park clean ups, to …

“Working with cat depot to helping make cat beds, working with senior friendship centers so several different initiatives from youth to the senior population to the environment,” said Nigro.

2022 Youth Candidate of the Year, Bernadette giving back plays a role in her future endeavors

“I like that we’re getting to immerse ourselves in different experiences, because its allowing us to see what our passions are, and what we would want to dive into deeper when we get older,” said 17-year-old, Bernadette.

While 60 volunteers seems like plenty, the boys and girls club is always looking for others to participate in their alternative spring break.

“I think if someone is looking for ways to give back to the community, and just help more, the club is definitely the number one spot to go to,” said Bernadette.
